Description

Sam Houston: President of Texas, Governor of Tennessee & Texas, Cherokee Chief.

Sam Houston, known as ᎪᎳᎾ (pronounced Kolahnah) which is Cherokee for Raven,  chose to live with the Cherokee Nation for much of his life as one of them speaking fluent Cherokee and dressing in Cherokee attire, both formal and casual. He was adopted by principal chief John Jolly (known as Ahuludegi, or Oolooteka)  And Houston still had time to graduate from West Point, govern two states, and be the father and president of a republic.

By the way, the first word spoken by a human on the moon: “Houston…”

Original painting by Christopher J.. Oglesby inspired by several historic black and white lithographs and paintings of young Sam Houston and other Cherokee grandees in Cherokee garb; the raven added as artistic flair.
