Sequoyah ᏎᏉᏯ
Original painting by cjo based on several historic lithographs & images of Sequoyah, the creator of Cherokee writing; the only known person in history to create a symbolic written language for a previously oral language. Also included in upper center is my impression of the masthead image for The Cherokee Phoenix newspaper.
Artist Christopher J. Oglesby, born in Tulsa, is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. He currently is studying both written and spoken Cherokee language.
