South Austin Homage to Rene Magritte
Pretty Cool Art Coffee Mugs

Enjoy your morning pick me up, or afternoon or whenever, in a stylish art souvenir coffee mug featuring my modern interpretation of Rene Magritte’s iconic painting “The Treachery of Images“.
Magritte’s original painting depicts a pipe, below Magritte painted “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.“upon the canvas, which is French for “This is not a pipe.” Here’s what Magritte said about his original work, and it makes me smile:

The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it’s just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture ‘This is a pipe’, I’d have been lying!

The painting is an example of meta-message conveyed by paralanguage, a concept presaged by Alfred Korzybski‘s “The word is not the thing” and “The map is not the territory”, an important influence on my own life and work.

My “South Austin” Interpretation

I have moved the setting of the painting of the pipe to modern South Austin, so logically the text is in Spanish, and the pipe depicted looks more like those commonly seen in South Austin Texas.

This original painting is SOLD.

Signed archival prints are available upon request; on 11×14 photo paper.
