My modern interpretation of Rene Magritte’s iconic painting “The Treachery of Images” which depicts a pipe and below it Magritte painted “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.“, which is French for “This is not a pipe.”

The painting is sometimes given as an example of meta message conveyed by paralanguage, a concept presaged by Alfred Korzybski‘s “The word is not the thing” and “The map is not the territory”, an important influence on my life and work.

I have moved the setting of the painting of the pipe to modern South Austin so logically the text is in Spanish, and the pipe depicted looks more like those commonly seen in South Austin Texas.

Here’s what Magritte said about his original work, and it makes me smile:

The famous pipe. How people reproached me for it! And yet, could you stuff my pipe? No, it’s just a representation, is it not? So if I had written on my picture ‘This is a pipe’, I’d have been lying!
